Rethinking global research: “The Africa Charter on Transformative Research Collaborations”

CIRAD is pleased to share the “Africa Charter on Transformative Research Collaborations“, a landmark initiative launched in July 2023 in Namibia. Developed by major African higher education and scientific organizations, the Charter promotes equitable and sustainable research partnerships by addressing long-standing power imbalances. Its ten guiding principles emphasize mutual benefit, African intellectual traditions, and shared governance, paving the way for a more inclusive global research landscape.
The Charter represents a vital step in shifting the global research landscape toward greater fairness and inclusivity. Catholic universities, rooted in values of solidarity and social justice, are well-positioned to incorporate the Charter’s principles into their research policies. By fostering ethical, transparent, and respectful collaborations with African institutions, Catholic higher education can contribute to a more just and sustainable global knowledge ecosystem. The Charter’s aspirations, which range from policy reform to global advocacy, align with the broader mission of Catholic universities to drive meaningful and impactful change in research practices worldwide.
